A clear and compelling explanation
The Bible explains to us that it is not a human work but that God is its author and that He is the Creator and Sustainer of the entire Universe!
For example, the Apostle Paul, guided by God, tells us that:
2 Timothy 3v14-17
“But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”
(King James Version, emphasis added)
The Bible we understand, then, was inspired “of God”. Literally the word inspired means that it was ‘breathed out by God’. God is therefore seen to be the author of the holy scriptures, that is the 66 books that make up the Bible. The process by which God breathed out these scriptures was through his power (that is, his Spirit) guiding human beings.
This time, the Apostle Peter, again guided by God, explains:
2 Peter 1v20-21
“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy [Spirit].”
(King James Version, emphasis added)
So, individuals “were moved” or as this phrase means ‘carried along’ by this power. This meant that “the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man” but instead was by the will of God.
However, crucially the Bible does not ask us to accept these things without providing internal and external evidence that they are true.
